Local High School Plants Holiday Cheer Downtown
Written November 2020 by Kelsey Nydam This 2020 season local WDSS horticulture class teamed up with local business Westbrook's to plant the planters around downtown. A huge thank for establishing this partnership between the BIA and the local high school goes to Sherri Wills, former Downtown Wallaceburg Garden Club Coordinator and active community member Sherri Wills and Linda McBeth the Horticulture Teacher at WDSS Highschool. They did an amazing job and we are looking forward to collaborating more with the High School! Next project is to move the old Downtown BIA concrete planters from Wallace Street beside the walking bridge to the high school to be used as raised garden beds for the horticulture class. Please reach out to BIA coordinator Kelsey Nydam if you are able to volunteer time and equipment to this great project! wallaceburgbia@live.ca |

Downtown Gardens Received Help this 2020 Summer
Written October 2020 by Kelsey Nydam
As the leaves change colours in the Downtown gardens we reflect on this past summer. Canada Summer Jobs grant approval for The Downtown Wallaceburg Business Improvement Association came later than usual this year. Without students to maintain the gardens we were thrilled that various businesses and community members pitched in to keep the vibrant planters alive and gardens blooming. This included Kinnette Park gardens receiving much needed attention from Riverview Automotive and Fountain Park being spruced up by Rottier Excavating.
.
After receiving grant approval for two summer students, on July 29th the Wallaceburg BIA welcomed Libby Moran and Ashleigh Lablance. Soon after the gardens were healthy, beautiful, and ready for public enjoyment. During a summer where stress was high for many, the hard work of these students, volunteers, and businesses did not go unnoticed by the Wallaceburg community. Talking to Ashleigh she expressed how many people made time to appreciate their work:
“Working on the gardens this year in Wallaceburg has opened my eyes to just how amazing and appreciative our community is. The people my co-worker and I have met, make the work we do worth it”
Thank you to all who helped keep the downtown clean and beautiful this year and to those who let our students know what good work they were doing.
